Amrita: From a job to becoming a successful freelance writer in less than a year

Amrita is a young freelance content writer based out of Mumbai. She dreams of having her own wedding planning company someday. We talked to her to understand why she chose freelancing and related aspects of freelancing

Why did you choose to freelance? Have you done a job earlier?

Right from an early age, I wanted to do something of my own. That was always a part of the bucket list.  I started my career in an event management company as a copywriter. This job allowed me to be creative and discover a flair in writing. This gave me enough confidence to go full-time into freelance writing.

Since how long you have been freelancing?

About a year or so, I started full time freelancing from July, 2019.

What kind of clients do you generally work with? International or local

As of now, I have worked with a diverse range of clients ranging from small businesses to large corporates on topics like Finance, Entrepreneurship, Food etc. Basically, anything apart from IT and Health care.

Why did you choose content writing?

My limited but enriching experience as a copy writer along with my strong inclination towards reading was enough for me to decide that it is going to be writing if I want to start my freelancer career.

How do you find leads for your work?

I found my first lead from a facebook group. Since then I get my leads from both Social Media and Referrals.

What do you do (readings etc.) to polish your skills?

I am an avid reader, I read a lot in both fiction and non-fiction. I also listen to podcasts and watch videos from the experts in my field to get the wisdom from the best. I also take up a lot of online courses from time to time on Digital Marketing etc. At the same time, I also believe that practising is the best way of polishing and hence I write from time to time to get feedback from my professional circle.

What is the best and worst part of being a freelancer?

The best part is that I don’t have to take any orders from anyone for my work. I am my own boss. The worst part is the fact that sometimes we get carried away with the work and the work-life balance goes for a toss.
