In love with freelancing, Pragati’s inclination towards writing led her to become a content creator and a copywriter post doing a MBA in Marketing. Moving forward, she is in the process of building her own business around content marketing. She says that negotiation is an important part of any deal making. According to her, maintaining transparency and having a win-win situation is essential for a healthy relationship with clients.  She considers leveraging social media platforms for networking as it helps build a personal brand too. For her, varied exposure is a pro and uncertainty is a con to freelancing. Feeling contentment with all that she has achieved, we wish her success as she ventures ahead in building her own brand.

Introduce yourself to us? Where are you from? About your family, parents? How was your childhood?

I am a content creator and copywriter. Born and brought up in Bhopal, I am an MBA graduate specializing in marketing. Growing up in a business family, I learned some valuable lessons that I believe no formal education can provide. From an early stage, I was exposed to the nitty-gritty of the business world and was taught how to handle both highs and lows gracefully.

Why did you choose the field of content writing? Speak to us about your passion for writing?

Though I have always had an inclination towards writing since childhood, I never thought I could make a career out of it. But one thing that I was always clear about is I wanted something more than a 9-5 job and I loved creating content. These two reasons were enough for me to start my career as a full-time freelancer.

When did you decide to build a business around marketing? What excites you the most about content marketing?

Being raised in a business environment, marketing is the dinner-time topic of conversation in our family. Also, after I completed my MBA in marketing, my interest in this field grew. So, this was the biggest decision making factor as I was always fascinated by the business world.

From the creativity involved in creating a piece of content to the efforts involved in marketing it, everything about content marketing excites me.

Why did you choose to freelance? When did you begin to freelance? Were you planning it, or how did it happen?

I chose to freelance because I wanted something more than a 9-5 job. It’s been more than a year now since I’m working as a full-time freelancer. Freelancing was never planned but it is one of the best decisions of my life.

As a freelancer, how are your services priced? What are the key strategies for you?

It depends upon the requirement. I consider various factors before coming up with a price, like time, the scope of the project, etc.

How to negotiate your deal with clients? What are the important points and techniques to keep in mind?

No matter how competitive your prices are, you cannot eliminate negotiation completely. So, it is important to be prepared to defend your prices. Here are a few important points –

  • Keep the relationship first.
  • Be transparent about your services.
  • Say YES only if it is beneficial for both parties.

How do you use social media to your strength to build an effective network and generate sales leads?

Networking is the backbone of freelancing. Social media helps in increasing online visibility and building a personal brand. Also, I consistently create and post content on social media handles, which helps in generating inbound leads

What is the one major pro and/or con of freelancing, according to you?

One biggest pro of freelancing is that you get a lot of exposure. You can work with clients from anywhere across the globe.

One major con of freelancing is uncertainty. But I believe it can be eliminated over the period of time.

What is the one thing about clients that you dislike? What can they do to improve your work life?

I don’t dislike anything as such. I cannot generalize anything here, it depends upon the client.

Honesty and trust is the foundation of every relationship. It should be from both sides to improve each other’s work life.

What mission and vision do you have? How do you want history to look at you?

My mission is to establish my personal brand and share content that will add value.

Do you feel content with yourself as you look back or do you think you have missed something?

Yes, I feel content with myself. I want to achieve more in life and I’m working on it. But when I look back, I don’t have any regrets because I feel the mistakes I made helped me to become a better person. 

Happiness may come and go but contentment stays.
